Clara Oswald Basics

Clara (Oswin) Oswald was a companion of the 11th incarnation of the Doctor (and now possibly the 12th) and seemed to be scattered across his timeline, as a similar woman every time.

Her first meeting with the Doctor was in Asylum of the Daleks, as Oswin Oswald. As this was far in the future, Oswin joined the starliner, Alaska’s crew and became the Junior Entertainment Manager. The Alaska crashed in the Dalek Asylum and all her crewmates were transformed into dalek-human hybrids. When the 11th, Amy and Rory also crashed into the Asylum, she assisted them in finding a way out. The Doctor came to her hide-out, but realised she was a dalek, and that she had created a fantasy world where she was still alive, to cope with the pain. Oswin had a breakdown when the Doctor informed her of this. Still, she allowed the Doctor and his friends to escape, uttering the words, “Run, you clever boy, and remember.”
She was killed when the daleks destroyed the Asylum. Her most significant contribution to the Doctor is that she erased all memory of him from the dalek databases.

After Amy and Rory’s departure, the 11th was travelling in solitude until he ran into the feisty Victorian Clara, who worked a double life- as a barmaid and a governess. Out of curiosity, she followed the Doctor around and assisted him in defeated the Great Intelligence. She fell to her death shortly after the victory, because the frozen Ice-Governess pulled her from the Tardis. On her deathbed, Clara murmured her famous line, “Run, you clever boy, and remember.”
The Doctor had not yet realised that she and Oswin were the same woman. He then looked at her gravestone- Clara OSWIN OSWALD, and set out on a quest to solve her mystery.

The contemporary Clara was born in Lancashire, England to Ellie and Dave Oswald. Ellie died when Clara was a young age, due to an unknown illness. As an adult, she dreamed of travelling, but found herself as a nanny.
In the Bells of Saint John, she accidentally called the Doctor, and he enthusiastically rushed to her, the Impossible Girl’s side.
Soon she was whisked away into the world of Doctor Who. She fought cybermen, Akhaten, ghosts and evil Wi-Fi. The Doctor tries endlessy to discover the identity, but all evidence pointed to the idea that she was an ordinary girl that did not remember her previous incarnations.

Her mystery is finally solved in the Name of the Doctor. When the Great Intelligence entered the Doctor’s timestream, turning every victory into defeat, Clara followed him, scattering herself all over the Doctor’s timeline and effectively saving his life.

Although all the Claras had similar personalities, the contemporary Clara was much more reserved, and less exaggerated. She was very intelligent, even the daleks admired her genius, and after having the skills uploaded to her, a proficient hacker. Clara was shown to be resourceful, strategic, courageous, observant and selfless. Like Oswin and Victorian Clara, Clara was vivacious, flirtatious and feisty. Great at working with children, Clara worked as a nanny, while Victorian Clara was a governess, and Oswin was the junior entertainment manager on-board the Alaska.

Clara always wore stylish clothing, but had a better sense of practicality than her predecessor, Amy Pond. She usually styled her brown hair into a bun, ponytail or left wavy, and wore natural make-up. Clara often wore red.

Oswin Wavy High-Ponytail (as seen in Asylum of the Daleks):
1.     Start with soft dry hair, and spray it with heat protectant.
2.     Flip you head over, and pull you hair up into a high-ponytail, but not so high it’s on the top of your head. You want it to be as high as it can be on the BACK of your head (see picture).
3.     Using a one inch curling wand, curl small (about one inch in width) pieces of hair, and leave them. DO NOT brush them out.
4.     Wait about 15 minutes, and then finally brush you curly ponytail out. It should have a natural bounce.
Note: If you can curl you hair before you put it into a ponytail, do so. I curl it afterwards, because I find my curls always fall out when I make a ponytail.

Clara Natural Make-up:
1.     If Clara is going to be running around chasing aliens (or children), she will need her face make-up to stick. I use Elf Studio Mineral Face Primer.
2.     Even Clara might have a few spots. Boi-ing by Benefit is perfect for covering imperfections.
3.     For light coverage, use Maybelline Nude Airfoam. I love this foundation, as it’s totally breathable and light.
4.     With all that nanny-ing, Clara might not get enough sleep. She could use Covergirl Tru-Match concealer in a slightly lighter colour than her natural skin tone to brighten up her eyes.
5.     For the same reasons as Step Number 1, Clara needs to prime her lids. Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden is perfect.
6.     Using the Sleek Natural Palette, apply the shade third from left on the top row (it’s like a taupe colour) onto the lid.
7.     Then use the shade directly below it (it’s a darker taupe), and use and crease brush to work it into your crease.
8.     To glam to look up a bit, Clara might use L’Oreal Superliner Gel Eyeliner to make a subtle winged effect.
9.     Clara does have beautiful eyebrows, but do we know she doesn’t use Elf Studio Eyebrow Kit to fill them in? Softly dust the powder across your eyebrows.
10.   Imitate Clara’s rosey cheeks with Bourjois Blush in 15 Rose Elact
11.   Just above the blush, on the cheekbones, Clara might use Benefit’s Moonbeam to highlight.
12.   Not everyone has Clara’s perfect proportions (on the FACE!), Elf Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder can slim down a broad nose, or cut down a big forehead.
13.   After curling your lashes, use Lancome Hypnose Doll Lashes, to get Clara’s doll lashes.
14.   Revlon Lip Butter in Pink Truffle is perfect for moisturising lips and adding a natural colour.

Clara’s Outfit of the Adventure
I loved Oswin’s cute red Converses in Asylum of the Daleks, and can imagine her wearing them every day.
As a woman of the 21st Century I can’t imagine Clara going without some dark, skinny jeans- perfect for adventure (just make sure they’re the correct size!).
This short sleeve tee is perfect for adding a hint of red into an Clara-esque outfit (from Sportsgirl).
To finish the look up, a cream trench coat is the way to go (I don't have the one in the picture, I couldn't find the one I own online). .

So there are the Clara Oswald Basics. I can’t wait to see her in Series 8, and see what her relationship with the 12th Doctor will be like. From Oswin’s first episode, Clara has been my favourite companion, and the easiest for me to relate to. I even look a little like her (except my nose is broader).
I’ll be doing an Amy Pond Basic next. Which might be difficult because I have a love-hate relationship with her (I’ll explain then), but first listen to Clara’s Theme at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMaSgvVChk0 .

Thank you for reading, and I know it’s cliché and predictable, but
“Run, you clever boy, and remember…..”
